### **Police arrest man following disturbance at Chilliwack residence**

Chilliwack RCMP have confirmed that a man was arrested following a disturbance at a residence on McIntosh Drive near Spartan Crescent on October 15\. Police initially received reports that someone was damaging property and setting fires inside the home, but investigators later determined that no fires had been lit.

No injuries were reported, and police described the incident as isolated.

### **Provincial advance voting unusually low in Chilliwack North**

New Elections BC figures show that just **3,607 of 41,633 registered voters in Chilliwack North**, or 8.6%, cast ballots during the first three days of provincial advance voting.

Participation has been considerably stronger in Chilliwack-Cultus Lake, where 6,178 of 43,872 registered voters, or approximately 14%, have already voted. Provincewide advance voting is running about 8% below the comparable period in 2024.

The difference between neighbouring ridings raises interesting questions about voter engagement and campaign competitiveness. Advance voting continues today and Wednesday ahead of Saturday's provincial election.

### **Police dismiss Highway 1 active-shooter rumours; vehicle damage under investigation**

Abbotsford Police say social-media reports claiming an active shooter was targeting motorists on Highway 1 between Abbotsford and Chilliwack on Monday were unfounded.

The clarification is important for Highway 1 commuters and commercial drivers, particularly because unverified reports spread quickly online.

The cause of the windshield damage remains under investigation.

### **Driver arrested after fleeing police and crashing into utility pole in Agassiz**

A 23-year-old man was arrested Sunday evening after a vehicle he was driving struck a utility pole near Highway 9 and Morrow Road in Agassiz.

According to police, the incident began in Abbotsford, where officers responding to concerns about possible drug impairment encountered a driver who allegedly became assaultive and fled. Officers did not pursue the vehicle, which was subsequently located following the Agassiz collision.

Abbotsford Police are recommending charges involving assaulting an officer, fleeing police and dangerous driving.

The collision occurred near an important Agassiz intersection and highlights the risks associated with dangerous driving.

Recommended charges are not convictions, and the Agassiz collision remains under investigation.

Among the larger proposed exemptions are $24,465 for Agassiz Harrison Community Services Society, $22,040 for Agassiz Harrison Senior Citizens' Housing Society and $17,535 for Kent Harrison Search and Rescue Society.

## **HOPE**

### **Silver Skagit Road closure continues amid wildfire-related restrictions**

Access to Skagit Valley Park south of Hope remains restricted following the Hozomeen Mountain wildfire.

The latest available highway advisory identifies a closure on Silver Skagit Road beginning approximately six kilometres south of Flood Hope Road and continuing toward the U.S. border. Silver Lake remains accessible, while Skagit Valley Park and Ross Lake Campground remain closed.

The restrictions affect backcountry recreation, tourism and access to a popular wilderness area south of Hope.

BC Parks continues to list the park as closed until further notice. Travellers should verify conditions before attempting to enter the area.

### **Hope community-services hub prepares for October 30 opening celebration**

Chilliwack Community Services will host an open house at its new Hope location on Friday, October 30, from 9 a.m. to noon.

The facility, known as The Commons, is located at Unit A, 895 Third Avenue. Residents and community organizations are invited to tour the premises and learn about existing services and opportunities for collaboration.

A permanent community services location could improve access to programs for Hope, Sunshine Valley, and Fraser Canyon residents, including people living as far north as Boston Bar.

## **FRASER CANYON**

The Lytton mayoral election has produced an exact tie between incumbent Denise O'Connor and challenger Jennifer Thoss.

Each candidate received **45 votes**, according to results officially declared by the Village's chief election officer. The municipality is applying for a judicial recount, which must take place between October 27 and 30.

If the recount confirms the tie, the successful candidate will be determined by drawing lots under the applicable election procedures.

The result leaves the leadership of a community still recovering from the devastating 2021 wildfire unresolved.

The two candidates have expressed differing views about the scale and financial sustainability of Lytton's rebuilding program.

A judicial recount could change the result. If the tie remains, the mayor may effectively be selected by chance.
