## **TODAY'S LEADING STORIES**

**One person has died in a residential fire on Young Road in Chilliwack. Fire investigators are working to determine the cause, and other residents have been displaced from the damaged home.**

A second significant public-safety story involves Friday's telecommunications outage, which prompted warnings that some Chilliwack residents might have difficulty reaching 9-1-1.

Infrastructure developments also feature prominently today. Chilliwack has announced a lengthy Prest Road traffic restriction, paving in the Chilliwack River Valley has been delayed, and a newly released Fraser Valley Regional District tender reveals preliminary planning for a civic building on agricultural land in Chilliwack.

**Local Sports Desk:** G.W. Graham recorded a shutout victory Friday, Sardis Secondary faced a difficult result against Robert Bateman, and the Loop the Vedder Trail Half Marathon and 10K takes place today.

# **CHILLIWACK & ROSEDALE**

### **One person dies in Young Road house fire**

One person has died following a residential fire in the 9800 block of Young Road on Friday afternoon.

The Chilliwack Fire Department responded at approximately 2:15 p.m. October 30, dispatching firefighters from three halls. Crews located an individual inside the burning residence who was pronounced dead at the scene.

The home sustained extensive fire, smoke, and water damage, leaving other residents unable to return.

The fire's origin and cause remain under investigation by the fire department and RCMP. No firefighters were injured, and no further details about the deceased have been released.

### **Telecommunications outage raises concerns about Chilliwack 9-1-1 access**

A telecommunications disruption on Friday affected telephone and internet services in parts of Chilliwack, prompting an emergency services advisory.

TELUS reported infrastructure damage affecting landline services, while Emergency Info BC warned that some customers could have difficulty reaching 9-1-1.

A 4 p.m. Friday update indicated wireless coverage remained available across most affected areas, except near Lookout Road.

TELUS indicated that suspected cable theft may have caused damage to infrastructure. The cause had not been conclusively established in the available reporting.

Repairs were expected Friday evening, but restoration throughout the affected area had not been independently confirmed Saturday morning.

### **Prest Road northbound closure begins Tuesday and continues into December**

A significant traffic restriction begins Tuesday, November 3, as construction continues on the Prest Road roundabout and widening project.

Prest Road between McGuire Road and Bailey Road will operate **southbound only, 24 hours a day**, with northbound vehicles diverted through Bailey, Lindell, Banford and McGuire roads.

The restriction is expected to continue until approximately December 18.

Prest Road is an important north-south transportation route serving residential neighbourhoods, agricultural properties and local businesses.

The temporary traffic arrangement is intended to accelerate construction, improve safety around excavations and advance paving before winter conditions worsen.

### **Chilliwack River Valley paving delayed until November 15**

A planned paving project in the Chilliwack River Valley has been rescheduled to begin November 15, weather permitting.

Fraser Valley Regional District Area E Director Patti MacAhonic says the delay is connected to ongoing eastbound Highway 1 construction. The contractor must complete that work and another project on Columbia Valley Highway before moving into the river valley.

MacAhonic says the Ministry of Transportation has confirmed that funding remains secured.

Road conditions and winter access are important concerns for residents, emergency responders, outdoor recreation businesses and visitors to the Chilliwack River Valley.

The revised November 15 start date is contingent on suitable weather conditions.

A separate Chilliwack Lake Road project between the two Edwards Road turnoffs is scheduled for completion November 6.

### **FVRD seeks archaeological services for proposed Chilliwack civic building**

The Fraser Valley Regional District has issued a request for proposals for archaeological consulting services connected to a proposed civic building in Chilliwack.

The project involves an undeveloped property of approximately six acres, with four acres identified for potential development. The property is within the Agricultural Land Reserve and a riparian area, and provincial archaeological mapping identifies high archaeological potential.

The successful consultant would undertake required assessments, permitting and archaeological monitoring, including consultation with First Nations where applicable.

The tender raises questions about the proposed building's purpose, location, cost, agricultural land implications, and relationship to existing regional facilities.

The tender concerns preliminary archaeological work. It does not establish that building construction has been approved.

The tender contains an inconsistent November 27 submission date in one timeline table. The cover and formal closing instructions specify November 19\. Prospective bidders should seek clarification from the FVRD.

### **Chilliwack residents have until November 8 to influence 2027 budget**

The City of Chilliwack is inviting residents to identify spending priorities as it develops its 2027–2036 Financial Plan.

The consultation asks residents to consider which municipal services should receive priority as the City balances infrastructure investment, operating costs and property-tax affordability.

Residents can complete the survey online or obtain a paper copy from City Hall.

The upcoming budget will help determine municipal spending priorities for the new council, including roads, public safety, parks and long-term infrastructure.

### **Loop the Vedder Trail Half Marathon takes place today**

The 2026 Loop the Vedder Trail Half Marathon and 10K takes place today, with the event scheduled to begin at 8:30 a.m.

The races follow trails along the Vedder River, showcasing the region's natural environment and recreational infrastructure. Organizers are also offering a children's run.

The event supports local trail development and youth programs, with at least $5 from each race registration directed toward the Chilliwack Park Society and the Mémiyelhtel Indigenous Youth Mentorship Program.

The event combines recreational sport, environmental stewardship and community fundraising.

It also introduces participants and visitors to Chilliwack's extensive trail network.
