City plans major Young Road improvements between Airport Road and Luckakuck Way
The City of Chilliwack is preparing engineering plans for improvements to approximately 800 metres of Young Road between Airport Road and Luckakuck Way. Proposed work includes road widening, sidewalks, curbs, multi-use pathways, improved street lighting and potentially a new traffic signal at Young Road and Olds Drive.
The engineering assignment must also consider utility relocations, property requirements and clearance restrictions associated with the existing and proposed expansion of Chilliwack Airport.
Young Road is an important north-south transportation corridor. Improvements could benefit commuters, commercial traffic, cyclists and pedestrians while supporting future airport-area development.
The City expects to issue its next engineering request for proposals on October 13. The design procurement schedule identifies March 15, 2027, as a target for substantial completion of that assignment, not necessarily completion of road construction.
Chilliwack seeks engineering firms for 2027 infrastructure upgrades
Chilliwack has issued an expression of interest seeking qualified engineering consultants to design infrastructure improvements at 10 locations, with another 5 provisional locations, as part of its 2027 Linear Upgrades Project.
The assignment involves civil engineering design, and submissions close Wednesday, October 14, at 3 p.m.
This procurement offers an early indication of the City's next infrastructure investment cycle. The selected engineering work will help determine how future municipal utility and related infrastructure improvements proceed.
City explores drone light show for Canada Day 2027
Chilliwack is inviting proposals from qualified companies to design, produce and deliver a Canada Day drone light show and pyrotechnic display in 2027.
The procurement closes October 28, giving event-production companies an opportunity to compete for the work. The tender indicates the City's intentions, although the final format and supplier have not yet been announced.
A drone display could become a distinctive addition to Chilliwack's Canada Day celebrations, creating opportunities for event suppliers and potentially attracting additional visitors.
Three Chilliwack school trustees issue farewell messages
Outgoing school trustees Carin Bondar, Richard Procee and Teri Westerby have released statements reflecting on their service to School District 33.
All three decided against seeking another term. Their departures come as 18 candidates compete for seven positions on the Chilliwack Board of Education.
Bondar highlighted work involving inclusion and Indigenous education, while Westerby emphasized collaboration, responsible governance and keeping students central to board decisions.
The departures guarantee changes in school board membership at a time when education policy, school safety, student services and governance are prominent election issues.
Provincial advance voting locations confirmed for Chilliwack-Cultus Lake
Voters in the Chilliwack-Cultus Lake provincial riding will have several opportunities to cast their ballots before the October 24 provincial election.

A free Family Resource Fair and Dinner is scheduled for Wednesday, October 14, from 4–6 p.m. at Chilliwack Secondary School.
Organizers include the school district, City of Chilliwack, Chilliwack Youth Health Centre and community partners. Families will be able to connect with organizations that provide assistance with mental health, parenting, substance-use challenges, grief, housing, and food security.
Why it matters: Bringing multiple service providers together makes it easier for families to discover assistance that might otherwise be difficult to locate.
Sardis sewer construction continues to affect South Sumas Road
Construction associated with the Sardis-Vedder Trunk Sewer Project continues to require temporary closures on South Sumas Road between Reid Road and Wiltshire Street.
The City's published schedule includes weekday closures through October 16 and specified weekend evening closures through October 18. Access arrangements are designed to accommodate school drop-off and pickup periods.
The work affects a busy residential and school corridor, but the underlying sewer improvements are intended to increase capacity for future growth.

Proposed agricultural veterinary clinic moves toward council consideration
The District of Kent is considering a zoning amendment that would allow a mixed-animal veterinary clinic at 5402 Lougheed Highway.
The proposed facility would occupy part of a new farm building on an 8.2-hectare property, alongside agricultural activities and dog boarding. Council is scheduled to consider the amendment on October 26.
Veterinary services are important to the area's agricultural economy, particularly for livestock producers. The proposal could expand local services and create additional agricultural-business opportunities.

The schedule remains weather-dependent.
Kawkawa Lake sewer cleaning scheduled for Thursday
Hope's public works department will flush sanitary sewer mains in designated portions of the Kawkawa Lake area on October 15.
Affected residents are being advised to close toilet lids, place towels over them, and secure them with a weight during the work. The precautions are intended to reduce possible effects of back pressure from high-pressure sewer cleaning.
Why it matters: Maintenance helps keep municipal sewer infrastructure functioning, but residents in the affected area should take the recommended precautions.
Hope council meets Tuesday as municipal election approaches
