**Thursday, October 1, 2026**

Today’s fresh local-news flow is fairly light, so I’ve prioritized genuinely new developments and a handful of continuing stories that still matter. The two strongest new items are a **potential redevelopment in Sardis** and a **regional highway contractor hiring drive affecting Chilliwack, Hope and the Fraser Canyon**.

## **Chilliwack & Rosedale**

**Mixed-use redevelopment envisioned for shuttered Sardis strip mall.** A commercial property just off Vedder Road that formerly housed the Sardis Bottle Depot, Tulip Donair and Hide-A-Way Cafe is being considered for mixed-use redevelopment. A construction date has not been established, so this is an early-stage development story rather than an imminent project—but the location makes it worth following.

**Why it matters:** Redevelopment of underused commercial sites along the Vedder corridor is part of the larger story of how rapidly growing south Chilliwack accommodates more housing without simply expanding outward.

**Highway maintenance contractor launches regional winter hiring drive.** A provincial road contractor responsible for highways and bridges across the eastern Fraser Valley, Fraser Canyon and the Highway 3 corridor southeast of Hope is holding a hiring fair and barbecue this weekend. Starting wages are advertised at just over **$38 an hour**, making this both a local employment story and a reminder that winter highway operations are ramping up.

**Purple Light Nights launches tonight in Chilliwack.** Upper Fraser Valley RCMP and community partners will hold a ceremony at the Chilliwack detachment at 7 p.m. as October’s Intimate Partner Violence Awareness Month begins. “Silent Witness” silhouettes representing people killed through intimate-partner violence will also appear around Chilliwack, Kent and Hope during the month.

**Fatal cyclist hit-and-run investigation remains active.** Chilliwack RCMP continues investigating the September 19 collision that killed an 80-year-old cyclist at Portage Avenue and Woodbine Street. Police have seized the suspected burgundy/red 2021 Chevrolet Silverado and arrested and later released an adult male driver while investigators continue seeking dashcam or CCTV footage.

**Queer Arts Festival returns for its second year.** The Chilliwack Cultural Centre will host the second annual Queer Arts Festival during October, bringing another locally organized arts event into the fall calendar. It’s a useful community/cultural story alongside the heavier crime and infrastructure news that can otherwise dominate a local roundup.

**Agassiz, Harrison & Popkum**

**New aquatic centre begins regular operations following grand opening.** The 27,000-square-foot Lets’emό:t Regional Recreation and Aquatic Centre is now open to the public following its September 25 opening. The[ District of Kent](https://www.kentbc.ca/?utm%5Fsource=chatgpt.com) has also released material explaining the Halq’eméylem name “Lets’emό:t” and the meaning behind it.

**Why it matters:** This is one of the largest recent community-infrastructure investments serving Agassiz, Harrison Hot Springs and surrounding rural communities, so the story now shifts from construction to programming, usage and regional impact.

**Agassiz-Rosedale Bridge rehabilitation remains on the watchlist.** The approximately $33-million rehabilitation of the Highway 9 bridge is now underway. With roughly 15,000 vehicles using the crossing daily, overnight alternating traffic and occasional closures make construction impacts important to Rosedale, Agassiz, Harrison, agriculture and tourism.

I found **no substantial new bridge closure or construction development today**, so I’m not going to manufacture a new headline from yesterday’s information. We’ll bring it back to the top when something actually changes.

## **Hope & Fraser Canyon**

**Purple Light Nights ceremony takes place in Hope tonight.** Hope’s launch ceremony is scheduled for **6 p.m. at Memorial Park on Third Avenue**, one hour before the Chilliwack ceremony. Silent Witness displays will also appear in Hope during October as part of the regional intimate-partner-violence awareness campaign.

**Winter highway hiring has direct implications for Hope and the Fraser Canyon.** The contractor hiring workers this weekend maintains roads extending through the eastern Fraser Valley and Fraser Canyon and along Highway 3 southeast of Hope. That makes the recruitment drive particularly relevant to communities where winter highway maintenance is not merely a convenience—it can determine whether major transportation corridors remain safely usable.

**Boston Bar fire investigation stays on the regional watchlist.** Authorities are still dealing with the aftermath of several fires around Boston Bar that prompted the Fraser Valley Regional District to seek provincial involvement. I found no substantive new investigative announcement this morning, so this remains **DEVELOPING** rather than being presented as a new story.

## **Regional & Political**

**Provincial-election nomination deadline approaches, with local candidate picture still developing.** B.C.’s major parties are moving toward full candidate slates ahead of the October 3 nomination deadline, while smaller parties are still filling races. In Chilliwack, OneBC has said it will not field a candidate against Heather Maahs in Chilliwack North but intends to field someone in Chilliwack-Cultus Lake; that candidate had not been announced in the September 29 report.

I’ll continue handling election coverage as a **local-information service**—candidate nominations, forums, documented positions and election logistics—rather than ranking candidates or predicting results.
