Community remembers cyclist Kitty Dunham. A candlelight vigil was held Saturday for 79-year-old Catherine “Kitty” Dunham, who was killed while cycling at Portage Avenue and Woodbine Street on September 19. Dunham was a Chilliwack Crime Prevention Services volunteer and was particularly well known for cycling throughout Chilliwack and Rosedale. Police located the pickup involved and arrested the driver, who was subsequently released as the investigation continues.
Promontory Road collision disrupts traffic. Emergency crews responded Saturday afternoon to a two-vehicle crash in the 45800 block of Promontory Road near Vedder Road. Eastbound traffic was temporarily redirected through the Vedder Elementary parking area; an ambulance attended the scene, although the extent of injuries was not immediately known.
Recent power outages hit Chilliwack and Hope. Significant outages affected thousands of customers in Chilliwack and hundreds in the Hope area Friday, with most service restored by Saturday morning. It is worth watching because additional weather-related or infrastructure outages could have business and transportation implications across the region.
Agassiz
Major new recreation and aquatic centre is now open. The Lets’emό:t Regional Recreation and Aquatic Centre officially opened September 25 at 6660 Pioneer Avenue. The year-round facility includes a six-lane pool, leisure and whirlpool pools, sauna, and other amenities, and is intended to serve Kent, Harrison Hot Springs, and FVRD Electoral Areas C and D. The project followed more than four years of planning and construction, and substantial federal, provincial, and local investment.
Police ticket driver after child allegedly found riding on adult's lap. Agassiz RCMP issued tickets following a traffic stop near Popkum in which police said a one-year-old child was traveling unsecured on an adult passenger's lap. The incident is receiving attention as a local road-safety story.
Agassiz–Rosedale
Bridge rehabilitation remains one of the region's biggest infrastructure stories. The approximately $33-million Agassiz-Rosedale Bridge rehabilitation project is beginning a multi-year period of structural repairs and improvements. Because the crossing is a crucial link between Highway 1, Agassiz, Harrison and surrounding agricultural communities, construction delays and overnight traffic restrictions will be worth tracking closely.
Harrison Hot Springs
More film production activity in the Harrison area. Residents along Rockwell Drive north of Harrison Hot Springs have seen additional filming activity. Film and television production has become an interesting local economic story because of its potential impact on accommodations, restaurants, crews and local businesses.
Municipal election activity is increasing. Advance-voting opportunities are approaching for the October 17 local elections in Agassiz and Harrison Hot Springs. The Harrison-Agassiz Chamber of Commerce has also announced all-candidates meetings, giving residents opportunities to hear directly from those seeking municipal office.
Hope & Fraser Canyon
Chilliwack Community Services expanding into downtown Hope. CCS plans to establish a storefront in Hope this fall, expanding direct access to services for Hope and Fraser Canyon residents. Programs already delivered in the region include newcomer services, childcare and resource services, and other community support initiatives.
FVRD election picture becoming clearer. Four Fraser Valley Regional District electoral-area directors have been acclaimed, including representatives for Popkum and the Harrison Mills/Hemlock Valley area. Elections will still be held October 17 in Electoral Areas A and B, covering communities including Boston Bar, Yale, Laidlaw, Spuzzum and Sunshine Valley.
